Red Light  Therapy at  Health on Point

Red light therapy (RLT) is a treatment that may help skin, muscle tissue, and other parts of your body heal. It exposes you to low levels of red or near-infrared light. Infrared light is a type of energy your eyes can’t see, but your body can feel as heat. Red light is similar to infrared, but you can see it.

Red light therapy is also called low-level laser therapy (LLLT), low-power laser therapy (LPLT), and photobiomodulation (PBM).

With red light therapy, you expose your skin to a lamp, device, or laser with a red light. A part of your cells called mitochondria, sometimes called the “power generators” of your cells, soak it up and make more energy. Some experts think this helps cells repair themselves and become healthier. This spurs healing in skin and muscle tissue.

Red light therapy uses very low levels of heat and doesn’t hurt or burn the skin. It’s not the same type of light used in tanning booths, and it doesn’t expose your skin to damaging UV rays.

Does Red Light Therapy work?

The majority of specialists believe they don't know whether RLT is effective for all of its stated applications. Most experts agree that the trials released thus far show promise for some illnesses, but that additional research is needed. Red light therapy is a relatively new treatment that is gaining popularity. However, most applications are not supported by sufficient evidence at this time.

How Safe is Red Light Therapy?

Red light treatment seems to be safe and has no negative effects when used as advised for a short period of time. This procedure is safe, non-invasive, and gentler than certain topical skin treatments. RLT does not employ cancer-causing ultraviolet (UV) light like that found in the sun or tanning facilities.

What are the other medical disorders for which red light treatment is recommended?

Other medical applications being researched include:

To lessen the negative effects of cancer treatment, such as oral mucositis.
Ankle tendonitis, rheumatoid arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and osteoarthritis of the knee are all conditions that cause discomfort and irritation.
Cold sores caused by the herpes simplex virus should not return.
On the internet, there are several different applications. There is no scientific evidence to support the use of red light therapy for weight loss, cancer, cellulite reduction, or mental health issues such as depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
